Nestled near the rolling hills of Sun Valley Idaho is a farm pulsing with life. The scent of rich, organic soil fills the air, lush produce of every kind unfurls and stretches towards the Western sun and happy, autumn-colored animals roam underfoot. Just beyond a teepee and flower garden sits a fairy-tale house with Arabian horses trotting nearby. As if all of this weren’t idyllic enough, out walk wonderful Larry and Sherry Kraay, the purveyors of Kraay’s Market & Garden.
I was lucky enough to find Kraay’s Market & Garden as a member of Harvest Hosts, a program that invites RVers to camp overnight at a variety of amazing, local places. Just off the local highway is a dirt road that leads to the farm-entrance and the spectacular produce growing within.
If you like farms, gardens or fresh produce — Kraay’s is the place for you.
As I pulled into a flat, dirt spot next to one of the greenhouses, I looked around and the words of Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Secret Garden drifted through my head:
“Sometimes since I’ve been in the garden I’ve looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy as if something was pushing and drawing in my chest and making me breathe fast. Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us. In this garden – in all the places.”
Demand for Kraay’s freshly harvested produce skyrocketed almost the moment they began deliveries in 2013. People lucky enough to live in Idaho’s Wood River Valley can easily order an individually prepared haul of fresh goodies on-line! With more than 31 delicious varieties grown at Kraay’s, along with products provided by local partners and artisans, there is an abundance of healthy choices for nearby restaurants and residents,Larry and Sherry welcomed me to their farm and home immediately, offering me a personal tour, even though they were clearly busy. As we walked through the rows of produce and rolling greenhouses, their love for the land, the work and the food was clear.
I parked next to an enchanting little trailer the couple keeps for WWOOFERS; no one was using it that night, so they graciously offered me a water hook-up and the freedom to roam the garden alone and pick whatever I wanted. Later, Larry and Sherry invited me to dinner, so we all piled in Larry’s car and drove into town (Dang’s Thai is amazing, by the way, if you’re in the area).
A sad wave came over me when I pulled away from Kraay’s the next morning, but my larder was stocked with fresh, vegetables, a desire to eat better and a promise that I would visit them again.
