Camp Free with Harvest Hosts!
This is Part 3 of the 6-part series “Cheap and Free RV Camping You Will Love!”
Get off the beaten track and drive towards a unique camping experience with Harvest Hosts
All over the United States, Canada, Alaska and the Baja, there is a special opportunity for you to visit farms, wineries, museums & other attractions — then camp for the night. Harvest Hosts members have the privilege of discovering local culture in a whole new way; not only do they get to immerse themselves in the culture that a local business provides, but they also get to pull right-up to the vines, or the brewery, or the crops, turn off their motor and stay.
Harvest Hosts is a winner for boondockers and travelers that want to see the places they visit and meet the people that live there, up-close. And, as with the other posts in this series, it offers an incredibly affordable way to do it! For the super-bargain price of $44 a year, you can join the Harvest Hosts network, which gives you access to camp for free at over 570 amazing places.
Here’s how it works:
- Go to harvest.hosts.com
- Hit “join” in the upper right hand corner
- Add a few pieces of info, pay the $44, and Voila!:
- Get access to all of the Harvest Hosts!
- you can search by geography or host name
- AND see pictures and reviews from other subscribers!
Once you find a host you’d like to visit, just call; most ask for one-day’s advance notice that you’re planning to visit. After you arrive, you are welcomed into the business and shown your dedicated camping site. I’ve visited three so far, and all were incredibly quiet and charming with level, private spots. There are no hook-ups at these sites; only self-contained RVs are allowed, and, of course, there is a Code of Conduct to follow.
Hosts invite RVers to stay on their grounds over-night in hopes that they will come into their shops or farms and purchase some goods. A very few require that you purchase a tour (but this is listed on the host site) and some just want to share their love of craft with you.
For the frugal boondocker, Harvest Hosts is a great investment. $44 is what many RV-campgrounds charge for a night! With Harvest Hosts, this $44 gives you access to hundreds of sites for an entire year.
My Harvest Hosts visits have given me some of the best camping memories I’ve had. I’ve visited a goat-farm in Buena Vista, CO (with delicious cheese!) an organic farm in Sun Valley, ID (with amazing, organic produce!) and a winery on the grounds of an old monastery in Canon City, CO (with amazing wine!).
Also, come back tomorrow for a Harvest Hosts Spotlight: Kraay’s Market & Garden in Sun Valley Idaho!
